PHOTONIS is a subsidiary of the EXOSENS group, an international high-tech group (more than 1500 employees,
€300 million turnover, ten subsidiaries), one of the world leaders in the night vision sector and various cutting- edge markets such as Nuclear Instrumentation. Our organization is structured around several autonomous sites (Europe, United States, Asia), and each PHOTONIS activity is managed in Business Units. We are commercially present on all continents.
At PHOTONIS, we have dedicated years to developing an imaging instrument for industrial neutron imaging. This program, called NEUTRONIS, aims to revolutionize non-destructive testing by introducing this imaging modality to mainstream industrial use. As we are entering the final straight toward industrial deployment of this novel technology, we are looking for a :
NEUTRON IMAGING SCIENTIST
You will be at the forefront of our mission. You will develop our prototype to improve its performance in terms of resolution, sensitivity, and safety, and explore the boundaries of what we can achieve with our compact source. For this, you will maintain and improve a compact neutron source, neutron optics, radiation shielding, and several imaging detectors. You will do this in collaboration with several international partners and will be partly responsible for strengthening these liaisons. You will manage all scientific aspects of the program, including simulations, calculations, design, and development.
You will work within the Nuclear Instrumentation department. Your daily working environment will be the NEUTRONIS lab in Brive-le-Gaillarde, France, where the prototype imaging instrument is located. Your team will include a technician and an engineer, and you will work under the supervision of the program's technical director. You will work in a controlled radiation environment and with activated materials, and you share responsibility for radioprotection and safety with the team. You will be responsible for the lab towards regulators such as the ASN and IRSN.
You should be willing to travel to liaise with partners, talk to potential customers, and present at relevant conferences. You should, therefore, be comfortable conversing and writing in English.
Your responsibilities :
Coordinate and carry out studies and experiments in support of the NEUTRONIS project
Conduct studies on the operation of the neutron imaging device to ensure compliance with the regulatory framework during the stages of prototype development in accordance with the competent authorities (ASN/IRSN) with the support of your colleagues from Nuclear Instrumentation
Increase the visibility of the program internationally, in particular through the writing of publications, participation in scientific conferences, the establishment of collaborations with external partners
Participate in the development of procedures and operating instructions for the prototype
Participate in the quality approach (ISO9001/ISO19443) in the department's working groups and risk prevention exercises
Requirements :
- PhD or MSc in physics (or other relevant field) + 3-5 years of experience
- Familiarity with physics simulation (ideally MCNP)
- Knowledge (or willingness to learn) about radiation protection and relevant regulations
- Expertise in software and hardware development
- English professional working proficiency; French working proficiency
- Independence, responsibility, and perseverance
- Appropriate mindset for a safety culture
What we offer :
- A full-time position in a thriving high-tech company
- Being part of an exciting innovation project on the cusp of commercialization
- Staff position with a “forfeit jours” employment contract (218 days per year) under the collective agreement of the metallurgy sector
- Preferred starting date: April 2025
Are you our new scientist driving the NEUTRONIS project? Do you have more questions regarding this post and what the work will entail? Please get in touch with the technical director of NEUTRONIS, Serge Duarte Pinto: S.DuartePinto@exosens.com.
Please send us letter and resume in English.
